This morning while driving to work I was stuck behind somebody driving a brand-spanking new Volkswagon Golf. In the back window they had a stupid sticker that said Fukengruven, which is a take off of the Volkswagon ad for Fahrvergnugen.
Now, Ive seen many variations of this recently. A brand new bug with a sticker that says Phishisgruvn or a Jetta with a Funkengruven sticker. While some may have seen these spin-off stickers as clever back in the day, they have no relevance now. Volkswagon hasnt used the Fahrvergnugen term in about 10 years.
I kind of equate this phenomenon with going out and buying some brand new stylish piece of clothing today and having Spuds McKensie screen printed on it. Or getting a California Raisins tattoo on your forehead. Although to make it more extreme you would have to have Spuds McKensie skateboarding and the California Raisins smoking doobies.
Of course, maybe all this fits into being super-retro. I guess the people driving these cars are probably 16 years old and had their parents buy them a brand new Volkswagon. That would have made them 4-6 years old when that stupid ad campaign was in effect, so I guess it could be retro for them.
I didnt look in the car either, so I guess they could have had a Fubu Spuds McKensie shirt and a California Raisins tattoo.
